New Delhi: Afghanistan defeated Bangladesh by 8 runs (DLS) and qualified for the semi-final of the T20 World Cup for the first time in history. All-rounder Gulbadin Naib received a lot of criticism for faking an injury during the match.
It was a must-win match for Afghanistan to qualify for the semi-final and eliminate Australia from the tournament. Rashid Khan and Co. only managed to score 115 runs in the 20 over but they made a great comeback with the ball and restricted Bangladesh to 105 runs in 18.5 overs.
Afghanistan were marginally ahead of the DLS target when the rain started and their coach Jonathan Trott asked the players to slow down the match. Naib who was standing at the slip dropped to the ground clutching his hamstring and the delay was enough for the match officials to stop the match. Afghanistan eventually won the match and knocked Australia out of the tournament.
Australian captain Mitchell Marsh after the incident said that he was almost in tears laughing and it was outstanding. He also watched the match with his teammates and said that it was an amazing game of cricket “I was almost in tears laughing and at the end of the day it had no bearing on the game. So we can laugh about it now but gee it was funny. It was outstanding”. Marsh said on cricket.com.au.
‘It was completely out of our control’: Mitchell Marsh
Australia qualified for the Super 8 by winning all of their group-stage matches. They defeated Oman, England, Namibia and Scotland in their group stage and were looking strong contenders to lift the trophy but after winning their first Super 8 match against Bangladesh they lost their next two matches against Afghanistan and India and got eliminated from the tournament. Marsh said that they wanted to keep playing in the tournament but it was completely out of their control.
“We were all flat (when the final wicket fell). We were desperate to continue on in the tournament. But fair play to Afghanistan – they beat us and they beat Bangladesh and they deserve to be in the semi-finals” he added.
