American Student Found Dead After Going Missing on Table Mountain Hike in South Africa

JOHANNESBURG: A 20-year-old student from North Carolina, Brook Cheuvront, was tragically found dead after going missing during a hike on Table Mountain in Cape Town, South Africa. Authorities confirmed the recovery of her body on Monday, though the circumstances surrounding her death remain unclear.

Cheuvront had been reported missing on Saturday after friends lost contact with her when the tracking app she was using suddenly stopped updating. Concerned for her safety, they alerted local authorities, prompting a large-scale search.

The search, led by rangers from South African National Parks (SANParks), alongside wilderness search and rescue teams, and local trail runners, continued late into Saturday evening. Unfortunately, as night fell, conditions became too dangerous for the search to carry on. The search resumed early Sunday morning, with the aid of an aircraft, which eventually located her body.

JP Louw, a spokesman for SANParks, stated that an inquest has been opened to investigate the cause of Cheuvront’s death. Authorities have not yet disclosed any further details.

Cheuvront’s disappearance and untimely death have sparked warnings from South African authorities, who are urging hikers to avoid exploring the trails of Table Mountain alone. They recommend hiking in groups of at least four people to ensure safety.

Table Mountain is a popular hiking destination, known for its stunning views but also its challenging terrain, which can be treacherous, especially for those unfamiliar with the area. Cheuvront’s tragic passing serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of caution while exploring the wilderness.
