New Delhi: British tennis player and two-time Olympic men’s singles champion Andy Murray confirmed the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024 as his last-ever tournament. Murray, who arrived in Paris on Tuesday for the Olympics, said that he will end his career next week at the showpiece event.
The biggest global sporting extravaganza will begin on July 26 and run till August 11. After arriving, the tennis star took to social media platform X confirming the Paris Games as his last-ever tournament.
“Arrived in Paris for my last ever tennis tournament,” the 37-year-old Murray posted on the X social media platform.
Tennis to start on Saturday on clay court
In the total of 32 sports to be played at the showpiece events, Tennis will mark its beginning on Saturday on the clay courts at the Roland Garros. Murray, who was considered as one of the best in the business till the recent years, won his first gold medal on grass at Wimbledon at the 2012 London Olympics, beating none other than Roger Federer in three straight sets.
The Brit retained his title in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, beating Juan Martin del Potro on hard courts. Murray said that representing Britain has been a matter of privilege for him over the years and he is glad that he will get to do for the one final time.
“Competing for Britain have been by far the most memorable weeks of my career and I’m extremely proud to get do it one final time!” Murray said Tuesday.
The tennis player, who was considered in the elusive list of players in the modern era, succumbed to numerous injuries in the recent past which resulted in the downfall of his career. Murray underwent a hid replacement surgery in 2019 and faced several subsequent injuries which resulted in withdrawals from the singles at the Wimbledon this month and many other ATP events before that.
