Andy Murray withdraws to end singles career, to play only doubles at Paris Olympics

New Delhi: Andy Murray pulled out of men’s singles on Thursday and will only play in doubles events at at Paris Olympics.

He had earlier confirmed to retire after Paris 2024, his fifth Games appearance. A two-time Olympic champion had earlier planned to represent Britain in singles as well as doubles.

The 37-year-old had been crippled by a series of injuries that includes a hip replacement in 2019 and a surgery last month in order to remove a cyst from his spine.

He had to pull out from Wimbledon’s singles matches and played in only one matcg in doubles with his brother Jamie.

“I’ve take the decision to withdraw from the singles to concentrate on the doubles with Dan. Our practice has been great and we’re playing well together,” Murray said in a statement on Thursday.

“Really looking forward to getting started and representing GB one more time.”

He pulled out just before the draw for the Paris Olympics, for which matches will begin on Saturday.

Murray is the only tennis plaer with two gold medals at Olympics, winning in London 2012 and Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

He said it was the right moment for him to prepare.

“I didn’t feel that way a few months ago when I thought this was when I was going to stop,” he said.

“I didn’t really want to, whereas now I want to and I know that it’s the right time for me.”

Murray also claimed a mixed doubles silver at London 2012 with Laura Robson.

In the ATP tour, he won three-times Grand Slams, including two Wimbledons.

The tennis tournament at paris Olympics will begin on July 27 and stretch till August 4 at Roland Garros.

Murray was beaten by Novak Djokovic in the French Open final in 2016.
