Following the game, Mikel Arteta, the manager of Arsenal, told BBC Match of the Day that he believed the referee had made a mistake, calling it “so obvious that today you don’t need my words.” He then told Sky Sports that he was “absolutely fuming.”
Former officials and commentators also criticized the decision. Before Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori scored the game’s lone goal, Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes was sent off later in the game after collecting a second yellow card. Police are looking into “threats and abuse” that were directed at Oliver after the match at Molineux, according to the PGMOL, the referees’ body.
It was certainly a big moment for the Gunners and the teenager, Lewis Skelly, who has had a very good start for Mikel Arteta’s side this season. His red card was a controversial one, but if the result was any different from how it turned out to be, there would have been further controversies that’s for sure.
However, In order to keep within six points of leaders Liverpool, Arsenal overcame Wolves, who were reduced to 10 after Joao Gomes’ second yellow card. The Gunners celebrated a victory from Riccardo Calafiori in the 74th minute.
