Aryna Sabalenka wins Brisbane International after beating Polina Kudermetova in final

New Delhi: Aryna Sabalenka won her 18th career title after defeating Polina Kudermetova in the final of the Brisbane International on Sunday. The World No.1 rallied from a set down to a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win against Russian qualifier Polina Kudermetova at the Pat Rafter Arena.

The 26-year-old lost against Elena Rybakina in last year’s final of Brisbane International but emerged victorious in 2025. Sabalenka is eyeing to become the first woman to lift three consecutive Australian Open titles since Swiss Martina Hingis, who won three straight Australian Open titles from 1997 to 1999. The opening Grand Slam of the year will start at Melbourne Park on Sunday, 12 January.

After a poor performance in the opening set, Sabalenka started the second set strongly and Kudermetova had to save break points in her opening service game. Sabalenka took a 3-2 lead and dominated the remainder of the set to force the decider. She was in complete control in the third set and won her first title of the year.

‘Super happy to lift this trophy’: Aryna Sabalenka

After winning the title, Sabalenka said that it is really important tournament before the Australian Open and the final was a bit tricky. She also praised Kudermetova and said that she has some variations and used them really well.

“It’s a really important tournament before heading into the Australian Open. The final match was a bit tricky, (both of us) were over-hitting. I’m really curious about the average speed of our shots. It was a crazy match, and I’m really glad I got this win” Sabalenka said.

“It was really aggressive. She has some variations and she was using it really well. She definitely deserved to be in the final. I’m pretty sure if she continues working the way she is, then she will be in the top 50 soon” she added.
