New Delhi: Ashi Chouksey set a new national record in women’s 50m rifle 3 positions to claim gold medal at the 38th National Games in Dehradun on Sunday.

A two-time medal winner at Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, Ashi registered a score of 598 to go past the previous mark of Sift Kaur Samra (594) that was set in 2023.

“I worked very hard for this, and I believe the credit goes to everyone who has supported me including my coach, sponsors, family, and friends,” Chouksey said after her win,” the 22-year-old said.

“Each one of them has played a role in my victory today. This is a moment of pride for me, especially because there was no one from my sport before, and here I am, achieving this milestone.”

Hailing from Madhya Pradesh, Ashi’s stock has risen in recent times and the national record will only reinforce her status as one of India’s to rifle shooters.

Athletes hail ‘professional approach’

Bihar athletes expressed satisfaction at the way the ad-hoc committee that is running the sport in the state has facilitated their push for improved performance.

The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) had formed a five-member ad-hoc committee chaired by Hockey India secretary general Bholanath Singh to run sports in Bihar after dissolving Bihar Olympic Association (BOA) over misgovernance.

The ad-hoc committee have been directed to conduct fresh elections by March 31 after taking charge of the players participating at the ongoing National Games.

“From getting us an overseas coach to helping us in travel arrangements, from the playing kit to letting us stay back for two days after the final, we have been made to feel comfortable and that helped us deliver our optimum performances,” Arti Kumari, who captained Bihar to silver medal in women’s rugby, said.

“We used to get one track suit of poor quality but now we have a full kit bag, complete with playing uniform and a cool track suit and a winter jacket that was so essential here, especially after our late evening matches.”
