Tel Aviv: At least 30 people were killed after an Israeli airstrike hit two schools in Gaza City on Sunday, Aug 4, Reuters reported quoting Palestinian officials.
As per officials, the Israeli airstrike hit a tent camp inside a hospital in the central Gaza. The health officials said that a total of at least 44 Palestinians were killed on Sunday, the day after a round of truce talks in Cairo ended without result.
The Gaza’s Civil Emergency Service said that several others were also wounded in the school that housed Palestinian displaced families.
However, the Israeli military on the other hand said that it struck a Hamas military compound embedded in the schools.
Israel asserted that the terrorist group regularly embedded in civilian institutions like schools using Gaza’s population as a shield. However, Hamas denies the claim.
This comes as earlier in the day, an Israeli strike inside the Al-Aqsa Hospital compound started a fire, and wounded at least 18 people as well as killing five, the medical authorities said.
These attacks come in hand with Israel bracing for a serious escalation after the assassination of Hamas’ senior leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran the previous week, a day after an Israeli strike in Beirut killed Fuad Shukr, a top military commander from Lebanese armed group Hezbollah.
Commencing on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu‘s pledge to eliminate Hamas, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant said that he is reviewing plans “that would exact a price in the case of attempts by Iran and its proxies to attack Israel.”
“Our readiness in terms of defence is high – be it on the ground or in the air, and we are prepared for both a swift response or attack. If they dare to attack us, they will pay a heavy price,” Gallant said in a statement.
