New Delhi: Paula Badosa stunned Coco Gauff in the quarter-finals to reach her maiden Grand Slam semi-final at the Australian Open 2025 on Tuesday, January 21. Spain’s Badosa produced an impeccable performance to beat Gauff 7-5, 6-4 in straight sets in a hard-fought clash and progress to the last four in the first Grand Slam of the year.

With her victory against Gauff, Badosa became the first to confirm a spot in the women’s singles semi-finals at the Australian Open this year. It was a memorable moment for Badosa as she took a while to come to terms with her victory against Gauff which was also her first win against a top-ten opponent at a Grand Slam event.

Gauff, who reached her maiden semi-final at the Australian Open last year, was looking to repeat the feat once again this year. However, her dream of securing a return trip to the semi-finals Down Under was shattered by Spain’s Badosa, who grabbed a straight sets victory against the world no.3.

It was a hotly-contested clash between the duo as Gauff dominated the proceedings initially in the first set only to allow Badosa to make a comeback. Gauff surged to an early lead in the first set but Badosa fought back to level things up at 4-4. The Spaniard then produced some brilliant forehand winners to eventually take the opening set 7-5 in what was a spirited display from her.

In the second set, Badosa raced to a 5-2 lead, capitalising on Gauff’s unforced errors. The American did win two games on the trot to stay alive in the set but Badosa eventually managed to clinch it 6-4 to wrap up a sensational victory and reach her maiden Grand Slam semi-final. Badosa’s best finish at the Australian Open before this was reaching the third round last year.

Who will Paula Badosa face in semi-final?

Having delivered her best-ever Grand Slam performance in her career so far, Badosa will be hopeful of continuing her impressive run when she takes on the winner of the quarter-final between top-ranked Aryna Sabalenka and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the semi-final of the tournament. Sabalenka will take on Pavlyuchenkova in the second women’s singles quarter-final later today.
