An Australian woman in her 20s spent a harrowing seven hours trapped upside down between two massive boulders in New South Wales after falling head-first into a deep crevice while trying to retrieve her dropped phone. The incident took place on October 12 in the Hunter Valley region, according to a report by 7 News.
The woman got stuck after slipping into the gap between the rocks, leaving her feet suspended above her head. Her friends initially tried to free her but were unable to do so. Desperate, they left to find phone reception and called for emergency help.
Boulders as heavy as 500kg were moved to rescue the woman
A complex rescue operation was then launched involving NSW Ambulance paramedics and a multi-disciplinary rescue team. The crew had to move large boulders, one weighing up to 500kg, in order to safely access the woman. Specialist equipment, including a winch, was used to carefully maneuver the rocks and create a path for her extraction.
“Never encountered a job like this,” says rescue paramedic
Peter Watts, a rescue paramedic with 10 years of experience, said the rescue was unlike anything he had ever encountered. “In my 10 years as a rescue paramedic, I had never encountered a job quite like this,” Watts told 7 News.
The rescue process took over an hour, and by the time the team reached the woman, she had already been stuck upside down for more than seven hours. Despite the long ordeal, she escaped with only minor scratches and bruises. Unfortunately, her phone was not recovered from the crevice.
NSW Ambulance praised the teamwork involved in the delicate rescue operation. “Every agency had a role, and we all worked incredibly well together to achieve a good outcome for the patient,” Watts said.
The woman was taken to the hospital for precautionary treatment and is expected to make a full recovery.
