Autistic Pride Day 2024:From delayed speech to eye contact, expert shares subtle signs in children

New Delhi: Autism spectrum disorder is a neurological condition and a development disorder that affects how people interact with others, communicate, learn and behave. In India, the prevalence of autism is estimated to be around 1 in 68 children, with boys being more commonly affected than girls at a ratio of around 3:1, according to a report from the India Autism Center. This number indicates there is a significant number of children on the Autism spectrum across the country and this needs increased awareness, early detection and intervention services. Hence, to acknowledge the significance of pride for autistic people, Autistic Pride Day is celebrated. This day is also celebrated to foster positive societal changes in individuals.

On Autistic Pride Day, Dr Nithin Kumar N, Senior Consultant-Neurology, Fortis Hospital, Cunningham Road, Bengaluru spoke to News9 and spoke about the 5 early signs in a child that one must notice if they are autistic so that early diagnosis starts. Since autism affects everyone differently, there’s no single checklist, but some early signs to look out for by 18 months include delayed speech or social milestones, like babbling or trying to get your attention to share something exciting.

Early signs of autism

Dr Kumar explained, “A child might also seem to prefer being alone, have difficulty making eye contact, or be overly sensitive to sounds, lights, or textures. Children will have attention deficit. They will not be capable of focusing on any point. Children will be hyperactive. They cannot stand or sit in one place for a while. They are very restless. Repetitive behaviours like lining up toys or hand flapping are common, and they might resist changes in routine or get very focused on specific interests. Remember, these signs can also be present in typically developing children, so it’s important to consult a professional for a diagnosis.”

Importance of early detection

Early detection and diagnosis are crucial as they allow a timely intervention that can mainly help in improving developmental outcomes in communication, social skills, and behaviour. However, the challenges in early detection include a lack of awareness among parents and caregivers, changes in early childhood development, and restricted access to specialised healthcare professionals and diagnostic services in many areas of India.
