The United Auto Workers (UAW) union has filed federal labor charges against former President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk following their conversation on X (formerly Twitter).
The UAW’s charges allege that Trump and Musk engaged in “illegal attempts to threaten and intimidate workers” who participate in strikes. The union pointed to a comment by Trump in which he reportedly said, “You walk in, you say, You want to quit? They go on strike, I won’t mention the name of the company, but they go on strike and you say, That’s OK, you’re all gone. You’re all gone. So, every one of you is gone.” The UAW argues that it is illegal to threaten to fire workers for striking or to actually do so.

The charges come at a time when the UAW is actively working to organize Tesla workers and has recently endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in her 2024 presidential campaign.
While Trump’s comments have drawn criticism, Musk, who has publicly supported Trump, did not address the remarks directly but laughed at them. According to a report from Axios, UAW President Shawn Fain condemned the behavior of both men, saying, “Both Trump and Musk want working class people to sit down and shut up, and they laugh about it openly. It’s disgusting, illegal, and totally predictable from these two clowns.”
The next step involves the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), which will review the charges to determine whether an investigation is warranted. If the NLRB finds that violations have occurred, it could impose penalties on the individuals involved.
