Aviation giants pay tribute to Ratan Tata: What Air india, IndiGo, Akasa and SpiceJet said

New Delhi: Tata Group air carriers Air Indian, Vistara and Indian Airlines in deference to Ratan Tata made a special announcement in memory of the Tata Group Chairman Emeritus who passed away late on October 9, 2024. Air India returned to the Tata Group in 2022 after a nearly 70-year gap. Ratan Tata had written a post to welcome the former flag carrier back to the group 2 years ago. Air India was founded by J R D Tata in 1953.

Vistara is a joint venture between the Tata Group and Singapore Airlines. The airline will take its last flight in November 2024. Meanwhile, the budget arm of the Air India brand, Indian Airlines is set to fold Air Asia India into itself, since rebranded AIX Connect, another Joint venture of the Tata Group. The Indian Airlines AIX Connect merger was completed on October 1, 2024. On November 12, 2024, Vistara will be merged into Air India.

Air India and Indian Airlines CEO’s message to staff

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson in a message to staff stated that the airline remained grateful to Ratan Tata’s immense contribution to India’s aviation sector. Air India Express CEO Aloke Singh said the airline had suffered a deep loss since it gained immensely from his stewardship, making the loss deeper.

Vistara CEO Vinod Kannan said Tata will continue to inspire the company as well as the country. “The aviation vertical was especially close to his heart,” he added.

The budget arm of Tata Airlines changed its website theme to white lilies superimposed on a dark background in commemoration of the death of the stalwart of Indian industry.

IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers praised Tata’s invaluable contribution to the aviation sector. Elbers acknowledged Tata as a source of inspiration and his memory as a legacy for the nation. Rekha Jhunjhunwala-backed Akasa Air praised Ratan Tata for his legacy of “unparalleled excellence, innovation and compassion.” Ajay Singh-led SpiceJet said Tata was a visionary leader and a pioneer of entrepreneurship who contributed to the building of modern India.

Singapore Airlines pays tribute to Ratan Tata

Singapore Airlines, a longstanding partner of the Tata Group in the form of the joint venture ailrine Vistara as well as the consolidated Air India aviation portfolio, called Ratan Tata a visionary global business leader. They also called him a cherished partner and dear friend. “He played a pivotal role in setting up our Vistara joint venture over a decade ago, laying the foundation for a strong and enduring relationship between Tata Sons and Singapore Airlines,” said Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong.

Civil aviation minister K Rammohan Naidu praised Tata’s transformative leadership for shaping India’s aviation sector. French Jet maker Airbus cancelled its planned inauguration of its new headquarters for India and South Asia as well as a training centre in New Delhi.
