New Delhi: Ayush Mhatre has been a revelation for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) this season. Much like his India U-19 teammate Vaibhav Suryavanshi, Mhatre has grabbed his chances with both hands and proved why he is one to look out for in the future. Mhtare continued his dazzling run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 with an impressive knock in his side’s clash against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) on Tuesday.
The 17-year-old lit up the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi with some cracking strokes en route to a phenomenal knock of 20-ball 43 against the Royals. Mhatre looked undeterred despite CSK’s shaky start in the game and helped his team capitalise on the Powerplay. His quickfire 43 was laced with 8 fours and a solitary six.
RR pacer Yudhvir Singh Charak dismissed Mhatre’s opening partner Devon Conway and CSK’s no.3 Urvil Patel in the same over to get his team off to a flyer with the ball. However, Mhatre combined with R Ashwin to help CSK stage a comeback. The 17-year-old looked composed under pressure and played his natural game to make the most of the Powerplay.
Mhatre smashed a hat-trick of boundaries against RR pacer Tushar Deshpande in the sixth over before getting caught by Kwena Maphaka, trying to muscle a slower delivery towards long-on. He finished with 43 off 20 and added a crucial partnership of 56 runs with Ashwin for the third wicket to help CSK get 68 runs from the Powerplay.
Mhatre missed out on a well-deserved half-century closely but ensured his team were in a much stronger position after their poor start in the game.
Ayush Mhatre’s impressive run in IPL 2025
Mhatre, who was roped in by CSK as a replacement for injured skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad midway through the season, has enjoyed an impressive run in IPL 2025. The 17-year-old batter from Mumbai has so far notched up 206 runs in six innings for CSK this season at an average of over 34 and a brilliant strike rate of 187.27.
Mhatre has already become CSK’s third-highest run-getter of the season, highlighting the team’s batting struggles in IPL 2025. The Mumbai young gun was picked up by CSK as a replacement after he appeared in trials for the franchise last year. The five-time champions, who are already out of the playoffs, might consider retaining him for IPL 2026 after witnessing his heroics as an opener this season.
