New Delhi: Paris Olympic gold-medal winners Viktor Axelsen and An Se Young registered dominating victories to clinch the men’s and women’s titles in the India Open 2025 at the KD Jadhav Indoor Hall in New Delhi on Sunday.
Axelsen defeated Hong Kong’s Lee Cheuk Yiu by 21-16, 21-8 to clinch his third India Open title while An Se Young defeated Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong 21-12, 21-9 in the women’s singles final.
The unseeded Japanese pair of Arisa Igarashi and Ayaka Sakuramoto beat South Korea’s Kim Hye Jang and Kong Hee Young by 21-15, 21-13 in the women’s doubles final clash. However, the Chinese second seeds pair of Jiang Zhen Bang and Wei Ya Xin defeated the unseeded French duo of Thom Gicquel and Delphine Delrue by 21-18, 21-17 to win the mixed doubles final. Malaysian men’s doubles pair Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin beat South Korea’s Kim Won Ho and Seo Seung Jae by 21-15, 13-21, 21-16 to claim the title.
The men’s singles final was expected to be a close match as Lee defeated Axelsen in the first round of the Malaysian Open last week and struggled to close out his quarterfinal and semi-final matches.
He got off to a poor start in the final and was trailing by 2-6 but he found his range of smashes. Lee tried to attack the backhand of the Axelsen but started making errors once the Dane made a comeback in the match. Axelsen won the first set and dominated the second set completely to take the prize money of $66,500 and 11,000 ranking points.
South Korea’s An Se Young defeated Thailand’s Pornpawee Chochuwong by 21-12, 21-9 in just 39 minutes in the one-sided women’s singles final. The Paris Olympic champion came into the final with a 9-0 head-to-head record against Chochuwong and dominated the match completely.
