RBI and Finance ministry clarify on queer banking
The Reserve Bank of India and the finance ministry’s department of financial services clarified in the week of August 25, 2024, that members of the LGBTQ community are eligible to open joint accounts with their partners and even name them as account nominees in the event of death. The finance ministry cited the Supreme Court’s ruling in Supriya Chakraborty and another vs Union of India, 2023.
RBI warns against fraud in its name
The Reserve Bank of India in a notification warned members of the public regarding tactics such as enticing, intimidation, and fake accreditation used by fraudsters to dupe people in the name of the central bank.
RBI clarified that it does not have any account in an individual, company or trusts’s name to hold any kind of funds. It also does not request money from any individual or entity. The central bank warned the public against any emails, SMSes, or letters received related to lottery wins that carried its name.
Members of the public should ignore any calls or communication soliciting money transfers by claiming to belong to RBI or any government department or agency. The central. bank warned people against sharing their OTP, KYC documents, information of their card, PIN or passwords with anyone.
