Bayern Munich’s forward Harry Kane receives Golden Shoe award

New Delhi: Bayern Munich forward received the Golden Shoe award after being the top scorer in the European football for the 2023-24 season. Last season the English captain scored 36 goals as he debuted in the German football, Bundesliga and is the first striker since Kevin Phillips in 2000 to win the award.

Kane is the third player to win the Golden Shoe award from Bayern, with Gerd Muller and Robert Lewandowski being the previous winners. Both have won the award twice while playing at the club. Last season, Kane scored a goal at an average one every 79 minutes.

Buzzing to pick up the 2023/24 European Golden Shoe tonight! A moment of great personal pride for me that wouldn’t be possible without the support of my teammates, coaches, fans and family! pic.twitter.com/weLHNk8Fob

Kane is coming this season having suffered a lost yet another final, this time a consecutive UEFA Euros final loss. The 31-year-old came to the most times Bundesliga champions Bayern last season, but the club went trophyless for the first time in 11 seasons. Still Kane’s personal performance was a standout.

During a ceremony in Bavaria, Kane reacted to his win and called it a “fantastic feeling”. He admitted that the award had given him a new “energy”. The English forward mentioned that he hoped to continue the form he had been in last year. However, it was equally pertinent that his performance brought home a trophy for the club.

Kane’s 36 goals from 32 appearances last season was very close to beating Lewandowski’s  41 goals from 29 matches with Bayern in the 2020-21 season. Harry Kane felt that the record was currently very distant and could only think about the record for next April when the season is nearing its end. For now, he was more focused on winning the side their 33rd trophy.

The Golden Boot has been in existence since 1967 -68 and was previously awarded to the top scorer of any European League. However, the rules were changed in 1997 and favour the players taking part in the bigger leagues. Lionel Messi has won it the most times, taking the Golden Boot six times.

Kane scored 36 goals from 32 games last season despite Bayern Munich going trophyless for the first time in eleven season.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
