BCCI imposes huge fine on MI skipper Hardik Pandya after code of conduct breach vs Gujarat Titans

New Delhi: Mumbai Indians (MI) skipper Hardik Pandya has been fined Rs 12 lakh for a breach of the code of conduct during his side’s clash against the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on Saturday, March 29. MI suffered their second defeat in a row this season after losing by 36 runs against the hosts at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

Hardik, who led Mumbai Indians for the first time in IPL 2025, was fined for maintaining a slow over-rate during the match. In a statement by the IPL, it was confirmed that Hardik was fined Rs 12 lakh as it was his team’s first slow over-rate offence of the season.

“Mumbai Indians captain Hardik Pandya has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during Match No. 9 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad,” IPL said in a statement.

“As this was his team’s first offence of the season under Article 2.2 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences, Pandya was fined INR 12 lakhs,” the statement added.

The match against the Gujarat Titans was Hardik’s first as captain for MI this season as he was banned for his team’s opener against arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings. Hardik served a one-game ban for maintaining a slow over-rate in MI’s final game last season. However, Hardik will remain the last captain to have served a ban for a slow over-rate as the IPL has decided to scrap the rule of banning captains for slow over rates.

Hardik Pandya failes to deliver for MI

Hardik had a dismal day at the office as the Mumbai Indians went down against his former team GT in Ahmedabad. The MI skipper did well with the ball to finish with figures of 2/29 off his four overs as the Gujarat Titans posted a strong total of 196 runs, batting first in the game. However, Hardik failed to deliver with the bat as he could only score 11 off 17 balls.

Barring Suryakumar Yadav, who scored a quickfire 48 off 28 balls and Tilak Varma (39), none of the Mumbai Indians batters managed to step up in the 197-run chase as the visitors were restricted to 160/6 to lose the game by 36 runs. This was MI’s second consecutive defeat in IPL 2025 after their 4-wicket loss against CSK in their opening game of the season.
