New Delhi: The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has decided to retire the Pataudi Trophy and renamed the upcoming five-match Test series between India and England to ‘Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy’, which received a mixed reaction from fans.

The India vs England Test series was named ‘The Pataudi Trophy’ in 2007 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the first Test between both nations. Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi became the youngest Indian Test captain at the age of 21, and his father, Iftikar Ali Khan, also played for both England and India.

The Test series played in India is called the Anthony de Mello Trophy, named after a former BCCI president. In 2020, the ECB renamed the Wisden Trophy, played between England and the West Indies, to the Richards-Botham Trophy, while the bilateral Test series between England and New Zealand was named the Crowe-Thorpe Trophy.

Since 1996, India and Australia have been playing a Test series for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which has now gained iconic status and the decision to rename the trophy after Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson seems to be done on the same lines.

The ECB decided to retire the Pataudi Trophy earlier this year without giving any official reason. However, they had informed Pataudi’s son, actor Saif Ali Khan, about the decision in April 2025. The Men in Blue will be playing a five-match Test series against England, which is scheduled to begin from June 20 at Headingley, Leeds.

BCCI requests ECB to name one post-match award after Pataudi

According to the Indian Express report, the BCCI has requested the ECB to name one of their post-match awards during the India vs England Test series after former India captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi.

“It’s the ECB who decides on whom they want to name their series. The BCCI has no role in it as it’s their home series. We have requested them to name one of the post-match Trophy on Pataudi, and they will revert to us” said BCCI official as quoted by The Indian Express.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) wants the Pataudi legacy to remain part of the India vs England bilateral Test series, which is set to begin on June 20.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
