New Delhi: The Board of Control for Cricket in India has spoken to under-fire skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Gautam Gambhir for over two hours on the Indian team’s 1-3 defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar series and is unlikely to make hurried decisions despite the team’s failure to qualify for the World Test Championship final.
BCCI Roger Binny and secretary-elect Devajit Saikia were present in the meeting held in Mumbai to analyse India’s poor display Down Under that forced them to surrender the BGT after 10 years.
It led to calls for the removal of Rohit, who was dropped from the fifth Test in Sydney because of poor batting form, and star batter Virat Kohli, whose struggles in red-ball cricket continued for yet another series.
But since the ICC Champions Trophy is set to begin in six weeks, the BCCI isn’t willing to take any drastic step as it could have a negative impact on the team.
“There was a detailed discussion on the Border Gavaskar Trophy performance and what all went wrong and the course correction required. But do not expect a hurried decision from the new dispensation of BCCI,” a Board source told PTI.
All-round criticism
India’s shoddy display was squarely blamed on the struggles of their ageing senior players, even as veteran off-spinner retired in the middle of the series.
Rohit missed the first game in Perth due to paternity leave but failed to fire in any of the subsequent matches in Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne and had to be dropped for the final clash.
But being the ODI captain and six months after leading India to T20 World Cup triumph, he is in the firing line with India’s next Test assignment being a five-match series against England in June.
As there is a gap of over five months before the England tour, the BCCI is unlikely to take a call on Rohit and Kohli’s future straight away, preferring to keep an eye on how the star batters perform in the Champions Trophy.
