Washington: Former US President Barack Obama praised President Joe Biden for his “service of a lifetime” following the latter’s recent Oval Office speech, marking a pivotal moment in the US politics.
In a post on X, Obama said, “The sacred cause of this country is larger than any one of us.”
“Joe Biden has stayed true to these words again and again over a lifetime of service to the American people. Thank you, @POTUS.”
Biden’s first speech came after he announced his withdrawal from the 2024 November election race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party nominee for president.
Biden’s Oval Office address, traditionally reserved for moments of national significance or policy declarations, provided the president with a platform to articulate his decision and rally support for Harris as the next leader of the country.
During his address, Biden called upon Americans to unite and recognise their shared values, casting the election as pivotal in shaping the country’s trajectory in the coming years.
“I revere this office, but I love my country more. It’s been the honour of my life to serve this country as President,” he said.
Explaining his reason for quitting, Biden said, “I believe my record as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for America’s future, all merited a second term. But nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy. That includes personal ambition.”
The best way forward, Biden asserted was “to pass the torch to a new generation”.
The President while concluding his speech pledged to Americans that for the next remaining six months, “I’ll be focused on doing my job as president.”
He asserted that he would stand up “from the right to vote, to the right to choose”.
“That’s the best way to unite our nation. There’s a time and a place for long years of experience in public life.”
