New Delhi: Bone cancer is not that rare as compared some of the cancers. In India according to recent data from the Indian Cancer Society, nearly 4,000 new cases of bone cancer are diagnosed every year. Along with this, roughly 5 per cent of all cancer cases across the world are bone cancer cases. Hence, early detection is extremely crucial for prompt treatment.
Dr G. Vamshi Krishna Reddy Director-Oncology Services, Consultant Medical Oncologist & Hemato Oncologist told News9, “Bone cancer happens when normal cells in the bone change into abnormal cells and grow out of control. Bone cancer can start in any bone in the body, but it most commonly begins in the long bones of the arms and legs. The exact cause of bone cancer is not always known, but there are several factors that may contribute to its development.”
Here are some:
1. Genetic Factors: Inherited genetic syndromes such as Li-Fraumeni syndrome and hereditary retinoblastoma can increase the risk of developing bone cancer
2. Radiation Exposure: Previous exposure to high doses of radiation, such as during cancer treatment, may increase the risk of bone cancer
3. Paget’s Disease of Bone: This condition, which involves abnormal bone remodeling, may lead to an increased risk of bone cancer
4. Chemical Exposure: Prolonged exposure to certain chemicals, such as those used in the rubber industry, may increase the risk of bone cancer
5. Other Conditions: Certain benign bone conditions, such as benign bone tumors or bone infarcts, may rarely progress to cancer
When bone cancer starts, it typically involves changes in the DNA of bone cells, causing them to grow out of control and form a mass or tumor. This tumor can then invade nearby tissues and, in some cases, spread to other parts of the body like a lung. Early detection and treatment are crucial for improving outcomes in bone cancer cases.
The warning signs of bone cancer can vary depending on the location and size of the tumour, but some common symptoms to watch for include:
1. Pain: Persistent bone pain that intensifies over time and is not relieved by rest or medications is a common early symptom of bone cancer. The pain may worsen at night or with activity
2. Swelling: Swelling or tenderness near the affected area of the bone may occur. The area might also feel warm
3. Lumps or Mass: A palpable lump or mass may develop on or near the bone. This lump may increase in size over time
4. Weakness and Fatigue: Generalised weakness, fatigue, and unexplained weight loss can be symptoms of advanced bone cancer
5. Fractures: Bone weakened by cancer may be more prone to fractures, even from minor trauma or normal activities
6. Decreased Range of Motion: If the bone cancer affects joints, it may limit the range of motion and cause stiffness
7. Other Symptoms: Depending on the location of the tumour and whether it has spread, other symptoms like difficulty breathing (if cancer spreads to the lungs), neurological symptoms (if it affects the spine), or gastrointestinal symptoms (if it affects the pelvis) may occur.
It is important to note that most of these symptoms can be caused by conditions other than bone cancer. However, if you experience symptoms that concern you, especially if they are worsening or not improving with time, it’s essential to consult a doctor for further evaluation and diagnosis. Early detection can significantly improve bone cancer treatment outcomes, and most of the bone cancers are curable.
