Kathmandu: At least 4 people have been killed after an Air Dynasty helicopter crashed in the Shivpuri area of Nuwakot on Tuesday. According to a source at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), the chopper, piloted by senior captain Arun Malla, had departed from Kathmandu and was en route to Syaphrubensi when the crash occurred.
The mishap comes nearly two weeks after a Saurya Airlines aircraft crashed during takeoff at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu. The flight, which was bound for Pokhara, had 19 people on board, including aircrew. All the passengers on board, except the pilot had lost their lives in the crash.
Tribhuvan International Airport, perched on a plateau and surrounded by deep gorges and valleys, is known for its challenging geography, making it one of the most hazardous airports in the world. The difficult terrain and unpredictable weather conditions significantly complicate flights to and from Kathmandu.
Nepal has a concerning history of aviation accidents. In January 2023, a Yeti Airlines flight tragically went down near Pokhara, claiming the lives of all 72 passengers and crew on board. Earlier, in May 2022, a Tara Air plane crashed in Mustang, resulting in 22 fatalities. Additionally, in 2018, a US-Bangla Airlines flight crashed at Tribhuvan International Airport, resulting in 51 deaths.
