Dhaka: The interim government of Bangladesh-led by Muhammad Yunus has revoked the diplomatic passports of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Members of Parliament (MPs) from the Awami League government. The security branch of the Home Ministry announced the decision on Wednesday evening, stating that all diplomatic passports issued to MPs from the previous administration would be canceled.
This move affects the diplomatic passport used by Sheikh Hasina when she fled to India earlier this month. The Home Ministry emphasised that the decision was made after consulting all relevant stakeholders and that all immigration counters in the country have been alerted.
Sheikh Hasina, who won the Gopalganj-3 constituency in the January election and re-entered the Jatiyo Sansad as an MP, now finds herself without the diplomatic privileges she previously held.
This decision, coming just two weeks after the formation of the interim government, underscores the tensions between the interim administration and student leaders who have expressed strong opposition to Sheikh Hasina‘s presence in India. She and her sister Sheikh Rehana left Bangladesh on August 5 amid widespread protests in Dhaka.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi has not commented on the diplomatic status Sheikh Hasina used to seek refuge in India. It is understood that she used her diplomatic passport as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh to leave the country.
