BREAKING: Rishi Sunak Officially Resigns as UK Prime Minister Amid Conservative’s Defeat in Election

London: Rishi Sunak on Friday, July 5, officially resigned as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom after meeting King Charles. This comes as the Conservative Party faced a bruising defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Taking responsibility for the loss, Sunak said that he is sorry.

“I take responsibility for the loss to the many good, hard-working, conservative candidates who lost tonight despite their tireless efforts, their local records of delivery and their dedication to their communities, I am sorry.”

Earlier, Sunak conceded his defeat and congratulated Keir Starmer and the Labour Party for the win even after holding his seat in Richmond & Northallerton.

“The Labour Party has won this general election, and I have called Sir Keir Starmer to congratulate him on his victory,” he said.

The newly elected Prime Minister of UK, Keir Starmer will officially be designated after meeting King Charles at Buckingham Palace before giving a speech at Downing Street at around 11 GMT.

What Was The Final Result of the UK General Elections?

In the 2024 General Elections of the UK, Labour crossed the majority mark of 650 constituencies required for a majority in the Parliament. Starmer, 61, stepped up to make his victory speech in Central London just a few hours away from formally becoming the new Prime Minister of the country.

“We did it, you campaigned for it, you fought for it, you voted for it and now it has arrived, change begins now,” asserted Starmer to the crowd, promising that the party will begin work right away. He pledged “national renewal” following 14 years of Conservative rule.

As per polls, the Labour Party secured 409 seats while the Sunak-led Conservative came second in the race with just 117 seats. The Liberal Democrats, Scottish National Party (SNP) and others won 70,8 and 33 respectively.

Rishi Sunak’s Legacy as First-ever British Indian PM

The Conservative Party led by Sunak suffered a heavy defeat after 14 years in the government, ending his premiership, 20 months after he was sworn in amidst political turmoil within the party.

The 44-year-old British Indian was undoubtedly the underdog in the general election. This comes at the end of a long line of Conservative Party leaders over 14 tough years that underwent some seismic shocks in the form of Brexit and then the COVID pandemic. He took charge at a particularly volatile period amid soaring inflation made worse by his predecessor Liz Truss’ disastrous mini-budget.

It was in the midst of the latter that Sunak shone as Britain’s first Indian-origin Chancellor, stepping up to the seemingly task of reassuring a panicked public about their finances.

In his first address at the doorstep of 10 Downing Street as Prime Minister, Sunak vowed to approach the country’s problems with “compassion” and “to place economic stability and confidence at the heart of this government’s agenda.”
