Though many are asking whether BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) and NSE (National Stock Exchange) will be closed for business on Wednesday, January 1, 2025, the answer is in the negative. Both BSE and NSE will function as usual like any other normal day.
As in any normal day, pre-open trade will commence at 9:00 in the morning. The day’s trade will begin at the usual time of 9:15 am and curtains will fall on the day’s trade sharp at 3:30 pm closing bell.

According to the normal course of business schedule, stocks markets in India conducts the day’s trade 5 days a week Monday to Friday. Both BSE and NSE remain closed on Saturday and Sunday. As stated above the normal timing for business takes place between 9:15 am and 3:30 am, while the pre-market session is conducted between 9:00 am and 9:15 am. Only on one day of the year – the evening of Diwali – a special one-hour trading is conducted. It is called Muhurat trading and this year it has fallen on Tuesday, October 21, 2025. The time is in the evening but will be announced later. The bourses open for this special session even if it is on a weekend.
Trading on the last day of 2024 ended dragging Sensex 30 in the red. The index closed the day at 78,139.01 recording a decline of 109.12 points, or 0.14%. Nifty 50 too ended in the red. It closed the day at 23,644.80 with a marginal dip of 0.100 points (or 0.00042%).
