New Delhi: The Men in Blue are on the back foot at stumps on Day 1 of the second Test match against Australia at the Adelaide Oval. Rohit and Co. bundled out for 180 runs in the first innings after opting to bat first. In reply, Bumrah removed Khawaja on 13 runs but McSweeney and Labuschagne batted brilliantly and stitched a 62-run partnership for the second wicket.
Australia trail by 94 runs with 9 wickets in hand and Team India need to take early wickets at the start of Day 2 play. Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar said that India made a comeback in the Perth Test after being bowled out for 150 and they are capable of bouncing back in Adelaide as well. He also said that the Indian bowlers need to hit better lines and lengths to think about putting the Aussies under pressure.
“As we saw in Perth, even a score of 150 was good enough for the Indians to get a small lead of 46 runs. Clearly, this Indian team is capable of striking back. All that they need to do is bowl a better length than what they did in the evening” Gavaskar said on India Today.
The Aussies have won all their seven day-night Test matches in Adelaide since November 2015. They also beat India by eight wickets in the pink ball Test at the same venue in the 2020-21 edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
‘Ashwin will have a big role to play’: Gavaskar
Gavaskar also said that Ravichandran Ashwin has a big role to play in the Adelaide Test. The last time Ashwin played a pink ball Test at the same venue, he took four wickets in the first innings, dismissing Steve Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green and Nathan Lyon.
“He will have a role to play. Anybody who has got more than 500 wickets will have a role to play. If not taking wickets, keeping a lid on the scoring and giving a bit of rest to the quicker bowlers” Gavaskar added.
