New Delhi: Carlos Alcaraz beat Novak Djokovic by 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 (7-4) in the Wimbledon men’s singles final and defended his title on Sunday, July 14. He previously won the French Open and the BNP Paribas Open earlier this year and it was his third title of 2024.
He dominated the match and handed Djokovic his first straight-set defeat in a Wimbledon final since 2013. Alcaraz won the first set against the Serbian international in 14 minutes and 5 break points to take the lead. He dominated the second set as well and put pressure on Djokovic.
Djokovic was not ready to give up and started attacking in the third set. He saved four break points in the third game and survived eventually. At 4-5, The Spaniard earned three Championship points but the Serbian international made a sensational comeback and took the set into a tie-break. Alcaraz took a 3-1 lead in a tie-breaker, but Djokovic didn’t give up easily. Alcaraz showed his class and won his second Wimbledon title.

After lifting the trophy, Alcaraz said that it is a dream for him to win the Wimbledon. “Honestly it’s a dream for me winning this trophy. It’s a great feeling to play on this beautiful court and trophy. It’s the most beautiful tournament” Alcaraz said after the match.
He also said that Djokovic is an fighter and he tried to win with his serve “It was 40-0. Djokovic is an unbelievable fighter, I tried to win with my serve, but I couldn’t. I tried to stay calm and positive going into the tie-break and play my best tennis. That’s all I was thinking about. I’m glad at the end I could find the solutions.”
Alcaraz also became the sixth player to win Wimbledon and French Open in the same year since 1968 and he said that it’s huge to be part of the players who won both the titles “It’s huge to be part of the players who’ve achieved Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year. Huge champions.”
When asked about which team he is supporting in the EURO final “With my team, for sure. I watch it for sure. I’ve already done my job … now let’s see the football. It’s going to be a really difficult match.”
He also praised Djokovic and his team after the win “I’m so nervous doing this speech I forget to mention Novak and his team.
