Mumbai: The Kutchi New Year is celebrated on the second day of the waxing phase of the moon in the month of Ashada, known as Ashad Beej or Dwitiya. This Hindu New Year tradition is observed specifically in the Kutch region of Gujarat. In 2024, the Kutchi New Year falls on July 7, marking the beginning of Vikram Samvat 2081 in the Kutch region. In other parts of Gujarat, the Hindu New Year is celebrated on the day following Diwali, during Kartik Shukla Paksha 1.
This festival, observed by the Kutchi community in Gujarat’s Kutch region, marks the traditional celebration of the arrival of rain. During Ashadhi Beej, local farmers gauge the atmospheric moisture levels to determine the best time for sowing crops. Given Kutch’s predominantly arid landscape, rain is significant for its residents.
The festival is prominently celebrated at Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, and Mulesh Mahadev Temple in Umareth, Gujarat.
