Chaitra Navratri Day 5: Skandamata Puja rituals, colours, bhog and mantras

Mumbai: The fifth day of Chaitra Navratri 2025 is dedicated to Goddess Skandamata, the fifth divine form of Goddess Durga. Skandamata, revered as the mother of Lord Kartikeya (also known as Skanda), is worshipped for granting the blessings of children, removing obstacles, and protecting devotees from negative energies. She is often depicted seated on a lotus, holding her son Skanda in her lap, with a lotus flower in two of her four hands and the other hand in a protective posture. Mounted on a lion, the goddess radiates a powerful yet nurturing presence, symbolising courage and maternal care.

According to Hindu beliefs, worshipping Skandamata on the fifth day of Navratri brings peace, spiritual strength, and the removal of inner turmoil. Her name is derived from ‘Skanda’—another name for Lord Kartikeya—and ‘Mata’, meaning mother. It is believed that those who offer sincere prayers to her are blessed with good health, success in critical tasks, and relief from adversities.

Navrtari Day 5 Rituals and Puja Vidhi

On the fifth day of Chaitra Navratri, devotees begin the rituals by bathing and wearing clean clothes. At the place of worship, an image or idol of Skandamata is placed on a clean platform. The area is purified with sacred water (Ganga Jal), and a Kalash (holy vessel) filled with water and coins is placed beside the deity. Devotees then make a formal vow (sankalp) to perform the puja with devotion.

The rituals include applying roli and kumkum to the goddess, offering food (naivedya), lighting incense and lamps (diya), and reciting mantras. Since white is considered auspicious for Skandamata, devotees often wear white clothes and offer bananas, her favourite fruit, as prasad. It is believed that this ritual pleases the goddess, who in turn blesses her devotees with good health and a disease-free life.

Navrtari Day 5 Bhog and Colours

As per scriptures, Skandamata’s favourite offerings include bananas and kheer (sweet rice pudding). Devotees also wear white or yellow clothing while performing the puja, as these colours are believed to attract her blessings and positive energy.

Skandamata Mantra

Chanting the following mantras is considered beneficial during the puja:

Ya Devi Sarvabhuteshu Maa Skandamata Rupena Samsthita।
Namastasyai Namastasyai Namastasyai Namo Namah॥

Simhasanagata Nityam Padmanchita Karadvaya।
Shubhadastu Sada Devi Skandamata Yashasvini॥

The Legend of Skandamata

According to Hindu mythology, a demon named Tarakasura once performed intense penance to gain immortality from Lord Brahma. Brahma, however, clarified that immortality was not possible but granted Tarakasura a boon that he could only be killed by the son of Lord Shiva. Feeling invincible, Tarakasura unleashed terror upon the world.

As the chaos escalated, the gods urged Lord Shiva to marry Goddess Parvati, resulting in the birth of their son Skanda (Kartikeya). In her divine form as Skandamata, Parvati trained Skanda in warfare. Eventually, Kartikeya defeated and killed Tarakasura, restoring peace. Hence, Skandamata is celebrated not only as a mother but also as a divine warrior guide.

On this auspicious day, devotees seek her blessings for strength, wisdom, and protection, continuing the vibrant spirit of Navratri.
