Also known as Abhaneri Stepwell, the Chand Baori is located in Abhaneri village near Jaipur and it is an architectural marvel. It was built in the 9th century by King Chanda of the Nikumbha Dynasty. The stepwell goes down 12 feet with each storey, with its total depth being more than 98 feet. There are 3,500 perfectly symmetrical, narrow steps that lead down to about 65 feet.

Why was the Chand Baori constructed?

The shape of Chand Baori is square and it has an impressive symmetrical design with multiple tiers of steps. Back in those days, when there used to be no rain for months, people depended on such wells for their daily needs like drinking water. The temperatures at the bottom was cooler than the surface, providing people relief from the scorching heat. It was a place where people from various communities used to mingle, where different communities met and exchanged ideas. The stepwell served as a lively crossroad for cultural, social and religious events.

The Chand Baori gets narrower towards the bottom and there are double flight of steps on three sides by which one can reach to water surface. There is a three-storeyed pavilion on the fourth side with intricately carved windows, galleries and balconies where the royal family used to sit. The stepwell has intricate carvings which reflect the spiritual beliefs and cultural values of ancient India. The ornate carvings and architectural details increase the beauty of the place. Today, it an ideal stop for travellers exploring Rajasthan’s vibrant heritage.
