New Delhi: Indian Railways has fixed August 15, 2024 as Chenab Bridge’s opening date in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). On Independence Day, Indian Railways will start train operations on the Chenab Bridge to increase tourism and improve connectivity in J&K. In the beginning, train services will be operational from Reasi in Jammu to Sangaldan in Kashmir region, then, gradually the services will be extended to other regions.
In totality, the Chenab Bridge is a part of Indian Railways’ ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project, which was sanctioned with the aim to link the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of India. The total length of USBRL’s rail network is 272 km.
Railways have successfully conducted trial run of trains on the newly built Chenab Bridge in the past few days. Now, they are ready to allow passengers to travel by train on this route from August 15. The running of trains on the Chenab Bridge will also provide an alternative and a reliable transportation system to Jammu and Kashmir.
Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) Project
Upon completion, the entire rail network under the USBRL project will stretch from Baramulla to Udhampur in J&K. The rail network is being built with modern state of the art technology. It will be an all weather travel for passengers. Railways have put utmost safety measures throughout the entire network. The entire network will be equipped with CCTV monitoring, advanced tunnel safety technology, and ventilation systems.
The network will pass through numerous tunnels and bridges which will be a scenic beauty for the passengers. The project has missed several deadlines. The government has promised to complete the project very soon.
Chenab Bridge Height
The Chenab Bridge is Indian Railways’ engineering marvel and is 35 metres taller than Eiffel Tower. The 359-metre-tall bridge can withstand earthquake forces of the highest intensity.
