Chhath Puja 2024 in Mauritius: Find out today’s sunset timings

Mumbai: Chhath Puja is a deeply revered festival dedicated to worshipping the Sun God. Chhath Puja is also referred to as Surya Shashti, Chhath, Chhathi, Chhath Parv, Dala Puja, and Dala Chhath.

Celebrated over four days, on this third day, known as Kartik Shukla Shashti, devotees gather at sunset to offer ‘Arghya’ to the Sun God, with Sandhya Arghya falling this year on November 7, 2024.

Devotees prepare offerings such as Thekua and arrange coconuts and fruits in bamboo trays or baskets. These offerings are carried in a ritual circumambulation before they are presented to the setting sun. Following the Kharna ritual observed on Panchami, married women begin a strict waterless fast from Shashti Tithi, abstaining from food and drink throughout the night until the fast is broken on Saptami with the ‘Paran’ ritual.

Before sunset, devotees and their families gather at ponds, rivers, or ghats to perform Sandhya Arghya, offering water and milk to the Sun God. On this day, worship of Chhathi Maiya (Goddess Chhathi) is also performed.

The third day concludes with the evening Arghya to the Sun, and the festival culminates on the fourth day with the Usha Arghya (morning offering). Devotees return to the riverbank on this final day, carrying the decorated bamboo trays and baskets, to complete the ritual with the final Arghya, bringing Chhath Puja to a close.

With its strong historical connections to India, Mauritius has a substantial Bhojpuri-speaking community, many of whom have roots in Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Chhath Puja holds great religious significance for this community. Recognising its cultural and spiritual importance, the Mauritian government designates Chhath Puja as a public holiday.

During this auspicious time, beaches and rivers across the island come alive as people gather to pray to the rising and setting sun. Temples dedicated to Surya become centres of vibrant activity throughout the celebrations.

In Mauritius, the Sandhya Arghya will be observed on November 7, 2024, with sunset expected at around 6:25 pm. As the sun begins to set, devotees perform a ritual circumambulation with their offerings, symbolising gratitude and seeking blessings for prosperity and well-being.
