New Delhi: Chikungunya, Dengue and Zika virus cases are seeing an uptick with the onset of Monsoons. Maharashtra from January to July reported more than double cases of Chikungunya cases with 875 cases, as against 363 cases being logged in the corresponding period previous year, as per the data released by the state health department. On the other hand, Bengaluru nearly touched about 10,000 cases of Dengue this month. There has been an uptick in vector-borne diseases such as Dengue, Chikungunya and Zika virus cases.
Chikungunya virus is spread to people by the bite of an infected mosquito. As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there is a risk that the virus can be transmitted to unaffected individuals by the infected travels. In the past, there have been outbreaks in Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and islands in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
One of the most common signs of Chikungunya may include headache, muscle pain, joint swelling and rashes.
Who is at risk?
In conversation with News9, Dr Shrey Srivastav Internal medicine-Sharda Hospital, Greater Noida said, “Chikungunya is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, primarily Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus. Risk factors include living in or travelling to areas with ongoing outbreaks, lack of mosquito control, and inadequate housing. Symptoms typically include high fever, severe joint pain, rash, and muscle pain. Those at higher risk include infants, elderly individuals, and people with pre-existing health conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.”
5 Home remedies to prevent Chikungunya
Dr Srivastav shared some home remedies for Chikungunya virus infection:
Turmeric Milk: Drink a glass of warm turmeric milk daily to reduce inflammation and boost immunity.
Ginger Tea: Consume ginger tea to help alleviate joint pain and reduce inflammation.
Papaya Leaf Juice: Drink papaya leaf juice to enhance platelet count and aid recovery.
Neem Paste: Apply neem paste on rashes to soothe itching and irritation.
Coconut Water: Stay hydrated with coconut water to help detoxify and maintain electrolyte balance.
