Chinese Defence Ministry spokesperson Wu Qian explains why PLA conducting military exercises around Taiwan

Beijing: Wu Qian, Chinese Ministry of Defense spokesperson, on Friday explained the reasoning behind the recent military exercises conducted by the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) around Taiwan. Wu stated that these drills are “reasonable, legal, and necessary” and are aimed at addressing the growing arrogance of the “Taiwan independence” movement and deterring interference from external forces.

Wu said that the military manoeuvres are intended to combat the separatist ambitions in Taiwan. He accused the Taiwanese leadership of challenging the one-China principle since taking office by openly promoting the “two-state theory” and seeking independence with the support of external powers. Wu warned, “This is a total play with fire, and those who play with fire will get burned.”

He stressed that Taiwan is an integral part of China and that resolving the Taiwan issue is a matter for all 1.4 billion Chinese people. Wu reiterated that the PLA will continue to protect China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity through concrete actions. He added, “With each provocation of the ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces, our countermeasures will advance one step further until the complete reunification of the motherland is realized.”

The military exercises come in response to the inauguration speech of a Taiwanese leader who, according to the PLA Daily, showed unprecedented support for Taiwan’s independence. This has significantly escalated tensions between Beijing and Taipei. The PLA Daily commentary described the drills as a direct punishment for the separatist forces and vowed to respond to their provocations in a language they would understand.

China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Wang Wenbin, issued a stark warning that the leaders of Taiwan’s independence movement would face severe consequences. “There will be bloodshed,” Wang stated. He highlighted the deployment of advanced military hardware, including J-16 and J-20 fighter jets, Type 052D Destroyers, Type 071 Large Amphibious Warfare Ships, DF-15B short-range ballistic missiles, and PHL-03 multi-launch rocket systems.
