New Delhi: What’s easier, coaching or playing? Well this question can have varied answers as some might be in favour of coaching a player or a team while others might opt for playing as a better option. Former tennis player Andy Murray, who recently had his first coaching experience at the Australian Open 2025, has shed light and revealed his side to the question.
In an interview with The Guardian, Britain’s Murray spoke in length about his association with Serbian ace Novak Djokovic as a coach in the first Grand Slam of the season. The former world number one said that he always knew that he wanted to coach and never thought otherwise and at the same time acknowledged that the things he learned were a bit different as to what he expected.
Murray finds coaching easier that playing
Andy Murray, who featured in the top league of the tennis players in world at one point of time, admitted that coaching is a bit easier and it’s definitely harder to play. He said that there are some areas he needs to improve on, one of which is to have a better understanding of the game. The former tennis star also said that it is believed that former tennis players are pretty good at strategy as they rightly understand the psychology of a game but there are a lot of aspects that he needs to pick up.
Stressful to be on the court
The Brit further said that he knows very well how stressful it can be to be on the court as during some game of Novak Djokovic, he felt really nervous but somehow managed to deal with it. Adding to it, he said that during the crucial moments, you feel nervous as a coach but it’s nothing like what and how you feel when you play.
Djokovic, partnering with Murray at the Australian Open, managed to storm into the semis of the event but had to pull out due to an injury. The 24-time Grand Slam champion also revealed that the two will discuss their future calmly, to understand whether to continue working together for the rest of the season.
