Mumbai: Bal Gangadhar Tilak, born on July 23, 1856, in Ratnagiri, present-day Maharashtra (then part of the Bombay Presidency under British rule), was a revered Indian nationalist, educator, scholar, philosopher, mathematician, and freedom fighter.
Widely known as ‘Lokmanya,’ which translates to ‘accepted as the people’s leader,’ Tilak was a towering figure in the early stages of India’s struggle for independence. His immense following and pivotal role in the freedom movement earned him the moniker ‘The Father Of The Indian Unrest’ from the British rulers.
The grand celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra today traces its roots back to Tilak’s visionary efforts to unite the people through social and cultural activities. He transformed the worship of Lord Ganesh into large public celebrations known as ‘Sarvajanik Ganesh Utsav.’ This initiative not only fostered a sense of community but also served as a platform for promoting nationalistic fervour and the spirit of independence.
Bal Gangadhar Tilak was one of the foremost leaders to propel Indian nationalism to prominence, significantly shaping the early stages of the Indian independence movement. Recognised as the ‘Father of Swarajya,’ Tilak was a staunch advocate for self-rule, famously declaring, “Swarajya is my birthright, and I shall have it.” He was a pivotal member of the Lal-Bal-Pal trio, alongside Lala Lajpat Rai and Bipin Chandra Pal, which revolutionised the political discourse of the independence movement.
In 1880, Tilak founded the newspaper ‘Kesari,’ which continues to be published today. He also established the Indian Home Rule League, where he served as president, further solidifying his commitment to India’s independence. Despite being imprisoned several times, including a lengthy confinement in Mandalay, Myanmar, Tilak’s spirit remained unbroken.
In recognition of his immense contributions, the Government of India issued a commemorative coin in 2007 to mark the 150th anniversary of Tilak’s birth. His legacy continues to inspire generations of Indians in their quest for justice and self-governance.
Lokmanya Tilak Jayanti date: This year marks the 168th birth anniversary of Lokmanya Tilak.
