Copa America 2024: Fans in Buenos Aires celebrate as Argentina lift their 16th Copa America trophy

New Delhi: Argentina are Copa America 2024 champions, lifting the cup for a record 16 times. They have now won the title back-to-back and three back-to-back major tournaments after winning the 2021 Copa America and the FIFA World Cup 2022. Argentina won the title with a 100% winning percentage in this tournament. The final against an equally in-form Colombia went into extra time.

For Argentina, Lautaro Martinez, the highest goal scorer of the Copa 2024, scored his fifth of the tournament with a right-footed shot from the right side of the box to the centre of the goal after being assisted by Giovani Lo Celso with a through ball. The fans in Buenos Aires were ecstatic as their team lifted the Copa trophy for the most number of times, with Uruguay following the trophy tally with one less than La Albiceleste.

Argentina’s road to defending their title wasn’t easy, as their star player, Messi, had to sit on the sidelines for most of the tournament after sustaining a leg injury. Martinez made sure that his side were not deprived in the goalscoring area. The team conceded only one goal in the tournament, which came against Ecuador in the quarter-finals. The game also marks the 145th and the final appearance of Angel Di Maria in Argentina colours. Di Maria had announced his retirement from the international stage before the start of the game. There was no better send-off possible for the 36-year-old than with a Copa trophy in his hand. His skipper Messi, though, has confirmed he will continue after this tournament as well.

After a thrilling final which saw the game go to extra time, Argentina emerged as the eventual winners. Here’s how fans in Buenos Aires celebrated the win.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
