New Delhi: FC Barcelona narrowly edged past Atletico Madrid 1-0 at the Metropolitano Stadium on Wednesday to book their place in the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid. The Catalans have continued their unbeaten streak to 21 games in 2025 and are even the La Liga leaders.

Barcelona dominated the match after a dramatic 4-4 draw in the first leg. While the hosts had opportunities, the visitors arguably deserved the win, with 17-year-old Lamine Yamal posing a constant threat to the opposition. Raphinha also threatened twice to extend Barca’s lead. Hansi Flick reintroduced Raphinha into the starting lineup. Ferran Torres scored the deciding goal, securing a 5-4 aggregate victory.

After this loss, Atletico Madrid, who had been the second-best team to Hansi Flick’s side for a long period, now have limited objectives for the remainder of the season as they trail the Catalans by nine points in La Liga with nine matches remaining.

Los Rojiblancos introduced Alexander Sorloth at halftime, a player who had scored in the previous three meetings between the teams this season. Sorloth missed a golden opportunity to score for the fourth consecutive time in the second half when he opted to shoot instead of passing to an unmarked Antoine Griezmann. Later on, the Norwegian striker’s goal was also disallowed for offside.

This result eliminated Atletico Madrid’s chance of winning a trophy this season, following their Champions League exit to Real Madrid in the round of 16. Carlo Ancelotti’s Real Madrid secured their place in the final after a 5-4 aggregate victory over Real Sociedad, following a 4-4 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu.

What next?

The Spanish Cup final will witness the eighth El Clasico, with the nation’s two most successful clubs set to lock horns on April 26th in Seville. Barcelona, having won the Copa del Rey a record 31 times, will look to add another title to their trophy cabinet.

FC Barcelona edged Atletico Madrid 1-0 to reach the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid. Despite Atletico’s efforts, including a disallowed Alexander Sorloth goal, Barca held firm to advance.  Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
