New Delhi: After one case of COVID-19 was detected in the Australian women’s water polo team at the Paris Olympics earlier this week, four more players have tested positive for the contagious virus. A total of five members of the Australian women’s water polo team have tested positive for COVID-19, increasing the headache of the organisers.
Australia’s chef-de-mission Anna Meares on Wednesday confirmed that five players in the women’s water polo team have tested positive. She confirmed the players are not severely unwell and will resume training when they feel well enough. The Australian women’s water polo team is set to get their campaign underway against China on Saturday, July 28.
“It is confined to the water polo team. There have been five athletes in total who have tested positive,” Meares was quoted as saying by Reuters.
Earlier, the first case of COVID-19 was detected at the Paris Olympics on Tuesday after one player in the Australian women’s water polo tested positive. The athlete, whose identity was not revealed, was isolated but the infection now seems to have spread to the rest of his team, showcasing the threat posed by COVID-19.
Meares confirmed all players who have tested positive for the virus are following the protocols like wearing masks and staying in isolation outside of training. She also stated that the Australian contingent is treating COVID-19 as any other respiratory illness but have protocols in place for those testing positive for the virus.
“We treat COVID no differently to any other respiratory illness, but we want to ensure that we have our protocols working as well and dealing with these illnesses and minimizing them is a part and parcel of every Olympic Games,” she said.
