New Delhi: The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, popularly known as the Darjeeling Toy Train, is a gauge railway that runs between New Jalpaiguri and Darjeeling in West Bengal. It was built between 1879 and 1881 and the route is about 88 km long. Its journey starts from about 100 meters above sea level at New Jalpaiguri. The trains ascends to Darjeeling at about 2,200 meters and passes through five loops and six zigzags. The daily tourist train runs from Darjeeling to Ghum, which is the highest railway station in India. Notably, in 1999, UNESCO declared the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway as a World Heritage Site.
