New Delhi: Everton fans had a lot to cheer as Everton took a 3-2 win against Tottenham Hotspur as David Moyes’s leadership brought back some of the familiar traits. The team was aggressive, the number nine scoring an important goal and displaying intent from the word go as they pushed high up the field. Leading the side for the second time in his career, Moyes has clinched a clinical win over the weekend against Tottenham.
Coming back to the Merseyside, Moyes is someone who can give a new breather to players who are desperate for a change to their game. The win brought back the elements of 2012 that Everton had been missing. In fact, the Toffees winning against Tottenham in December of 2012 was the last time they won against they registered a win against the side at home.
At the start itself, they had scored twice from open play which so far had been difficult for Everton. The finishing though was strained as Spurs had got some late goals to make a late comeback. Still, it may have been the most exciting performance of the season at Goodison Park.
David Moyes turning Everton weakness into strength
Moyes obviously has a big job in hand as he tries to take the team clear of the relegation zone and it is still a long way to go. There are things that Moyes has in his hand. Everton have been devoid of goals and attacking threat this season. Against Spurs though, it was their attack that was the strength of the Merseyside club’s win. Everton kept creating chances and converted them too as Dominic Calvert-Lewin was brilliant throughout the game.
Calvert-Lewin came with an attacking freedom and looked a different player from the moment he hit the back of the net. Moyes has always been known for his preference for a centre-forward or striker who can compete physically well, hold possession, run the channels, and get on the end of crosses.
During the game, the 27-year-old was constantly aggressive, had the most duel wins in the game and the Spurs defence just had no answer to his amazing runs. Everton of course will hope that Calvert-Lewin’s goal will bring back some confidence. Since 2017, it was the first time that Everton were leading with three goals and that itself speaks volumes about the Moyes effect.
Moyes has always been known for demanding a lot from players though it was Jesper Lindstrom who had the maximum workload on the right. Lindstrom though was brought in to keep his players fresh as confessed by Moyes. He became a winger during possessions and a right-back without it. It though meant that Iliman Ndiaye remained higher up on the pitch on the left and strengthened Everton in the final third. Moyes of course understands the pulse of Premier League and his club.
There are worries of course for the Toffees, as Tottenham had put them in a tough spot towards the end. Tottenham had regained some momentum but in most sense, Tottenham had won the tactical contest.
Most times this season Calvert-Lewin and Sean Dyche were surrounded by their opposite players while trying to win headers. However, Moyes ensured that his midfield kept pushing towards the striker. Of course, Everton cannot get carried away on the basis of the first-half performance.
David Moyes could be the trump card that makes the difference in Everton’s season as they steer away from relegation zone for now with their win against Tottenham Hotspur. Football Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
