New Delhi: India all-rounder Deepti Sharma has been appointed as the new captain of the UP Warriorz ahead of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025. Deepti will replace Alyssa Healy, who has been ruled out of the tournament due to an injury. Deepti served as the team’s vice-captain under Healy in the last two seasons and will now be taking charge as the captain of the side.

The India all-rounder is one of the most experienced players in the UP Warriorz line-up and has been part of the leadership group of the franchise and the Indian team for a while now. UP Warriorz did have some strong captaincy contenders like Australian all-rounders Tahlia McGrath and Grace Harris. However, they decided to hand over the reins to the local star in Deepti.

Apart from being one of the most experienced players in the squad, Deepti has also been a consistent performer for the UP Warriorz over the last two seasons and deserves the leadership role. Healy will be missing the entire WPL 2025 due to a stress injury in her right foot. Her absence is a huge blow to the Warriorz as it will leave a huge void in their batting line-up.

“I am delighted and honoured to be named captain of the UP Warriorz, which is a team from my home state. The UP Warriorz has a fantastic squad, and we are confident that we will entertain our fans with the Warriorz brand of cricket,” Deepti said after being appointed the new captain of the side in the absence of Healy.

Deepti will become the first Indian to lead the UP Warriorz in the WPL and joins the likes of Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana in becoming the third Indian captain in WPL 2025. Harmanpreet is leading her franchise Mumbai Indians while Mandhana is in charge of her team Royal Challengers Bengaluru.

Deepti Sharma’s performance in WPL

Deepti has been an integral part of the UP Warriorz squad since the inception of the WPL in 2023. The India all-rounder has so far played 17 matches for the Warriorz in the WPL and has 385 runs to her name at an average of 38.50 and a strike rate of 118.82, including three fifties. She also has 19 wickets to her name in 10 matches at an economy rate of 8.11.

India all-rounder Deepti Sharma will be leading the UP Warriorz in the absence of injured Australia wicket-keeper batter Alyssa Healy in the upcoming WPL 2025.  Cricket Sports News: Latest Cricket News, Cricket Live Score, Sports Breaking News from Sports Today
