New Delhi: Business magnate Dhirbubhai Ambani started his journey as a salaried professional with a monthly payout of just Rs 300. Born on December 28, 1932, the Gujarati businessman rose from humble origins to raise an energy and telecom giant. Today, Dhirubhai Ambani’s legacy is being carried on by his sons Mukesh and Anil.

Dhirubhai Ambani Early life

Dhirubhai Ambani was forced to leave studies after the 10th standard owing to economic hardships. He travelled to Yemen and worked at a petrol pump in the port city of Aden for Rs 300 per month. Here he was promoted to the post of manager. He would eventually work there to earn more and save enough to return to India to try his hand at entrepreneurship.

How Dhirubhai started Reliance

Dhirubhai returned to India in 1954 with savings worth Rs 500. He set up Reliance Corporation in a small rented room in Mumbai which was involved in polyester yarns imports and the export of spices. He entered the textile business in 1966 with the brand Vimal. Reliance Corp eventually expanded into the petrochemicals sector where he employed lakhs of people. Reliance became India’s leading company with a valuation of Rs 62,000 crore by the year 2000.

Dhirubhai Ambani’s legacy

Dhirubhai died on July 6, 2002, without a succession plan in place leading to an internecine battle between sons Mukesh and Anil which was settled with legal help. Mukesh, who inherited the legacy business has since diversified Reliance into an oil-to-telecom conglomerate. Reliance Industries under Mukesh Ambani has since grown into a Rs 16.60 lakh crore empire.

Anil inherited the telecom business and pivoted into media, infrastructure, power generation as well as insurance. However, since branching out on his own Anil’s empire has witnessed a few setbacks. At the time of his death, Dhirubhai’s net worth stood at $2.9 billion and he was ranked as the 138th richest billionaire in the world by Forbes.

Dhirubhai Ambani cars

Dhirubhai owned a 1958 Cadillac car which was manufactured in the US by General Motors. Last priced at Rs 45 lakh ex-showroom, Cadillac has never been sold in India. To be sure, Dhirubhai imported the car for his use, TV9 Bharatvarsh reported. Dhirubhai’s Cadillac was pruchased by the father-in-law of Malayalam cinema superstar Mohanlal, according to the report.
