New Delhi: Diarrheal diseases during monsoons are a significant health challenge in children across the globe, especially in the developing world where access to safe water and health facilities is a luxury. These diseases cause severe dehydration, malnutrition, and in rare cases, death. However Parents can effectively prevent and manage diarrheal infections by keeping their children healthy.
In an interaction with News9Live, Dr. Sriram Bonu, MBBS, MD (Paediatrics), DM(Neonatology), Marathahalli, Bangalore, shared some guidelines for preventing and controlling diarrheal diseases in children.
Ensure Clean Drinking Water: The provision of clean drinking water is a basic necessity that would help eradicate diarrheal diseases. Parents should make sure that their children only take water that has been purified or boiled.
Promote Good Hygiene Practices: It is important to teach children about good hygiene. Encourage the practice of hand washing with soap and water, especially before eating and after using the bathroom. Parents should closely monitor hand washing of children to ensure that they are doing it right.
Proper Handling and Cooking of Foods: The major cause of diarrhea in children are foodborne pathogens. Proper handling and cooking of foods are crucial to prevent foodborne illnesses. Thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables under clean, running water before eating, cutting, or cooking them. Do not give children raw or undercooked meats, poultry, seafood, or eggs.
Vaccinations: Some vaccines can help protect against diarrheal diseases, including the rotavirus vaccine. Make sure that your child has received all the vaccinations that are required for his or her age.
Safe Sanitation Practices: Personal hygiene is very important in the prevention of diarrheal diseases. Make sure that you have a clean and properly working toilet in your home. Ensure children learn how to use the toilet properly and also to wash their hands after using the toilet.
Avoiding Contaminated Surfaces: Children are naturally curious and often put their hands and objects in their mouths, increasing their risk of exposure to pathogens. To minimise this risk, make sure to wash your children’s hands frequently. Additionally, clean and disinfect commonly touched objects and toys regularly. This practice can significantly reduce the chance of infection and help keep your children healthy.
Immediate Response to Diarrhea: If your child has diarrhea, it is important to intervene early enough to avoid the child becoming dehydrated. Give ORS for replacement of fluids and electrolytes lost during the disease. Do not consume soda and other sugary products as they will aggravate the situation and cause more dehydration. Watch your child’s progress and go to the doctor if you see signs of very dry skin, your child is sleepy or cranky, or your eyes look sunken.
To avoid and control diarrheal diseases in children, it is essential to practice proper hygiene, provide a nutritious diet, use safe water and food, ensure timely vaccinations, and address the first signs of illness promptly. By following these guidelines, parents can protect their children from these potentially dangerous diseases and support their healthy development.
