An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a medical emergency condition in which a bulge or enlargement in the lower part of the aorta occurs which is the major blood vessel that supplies blood to the body. This section of the aorta runs through the abdomen. When the wall of the aorta weakens, it can lead to a ballooning effect, resulting in an aneurysm.

What are the causes of abdominal aortic aneurysm?

The common causes of abdominal aortic aneurysm are:

Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries)
High blood pressure
Smoking
Genetic factors
Age over 65)
Male gender

What are the symptoms of abdominal aortic aneurysm?

Common symptoms of abdominal aortic aneurysm that patients should look for are:

Deep, constant abdominal pain
Lower back pain, possibly radiating to legs or buttocks
Pulsating sensation near the navel
Sudden, severe abdominal or back pain (if rupture occurs)

If an aneurysm grows large and ruptures, it can cause life-threatening internal bleeding. It can be prevented by:

Quit smoking

For treatment, smaller aneurysms may be monitored, while larger or symptomatic ones may require surgical repair, either through open surgery or a less invasive endovascular procedure.
