Panna Tiger Reserve: The home to the Big Cat
Panna Tiger Reserve is located in Madhya Pradesh’s Panna and Chhatarpur districts. It covers a total area of 1598.1 sq km out of which the core area is 576.13 sq km and the buffer zone is 1021.97 sq km. In 1994, it became India’s twenty-second tiger reserve and the fifth in Madhya Pradesh. In 2007, the Union Ministry of Tourism gave it the Award of Excellence as the best-maintained national park in India. In 2009, it lost almost all its tigers to poaching but has bounced remarkably since then with the tiger population shooting up manifold.
Situated in the Vindhya Hills, the Panna Tiger Reserve is a critical habitat for the tigers and is a dynamic and dry deciduous forest. The land has, plateaus, gorges, waterfalls, archaeological splendours, and cultural richness. There is the Ken River which heightens the beauty of the tiger reserve. The Vindhya Hill range links the eastern and western populations of wild animals.
The animals of the Panna Tiger Reserve
As the name suggests, the place is one of the safe havens for tigers in India. Apart from the Big Cat, one can find leopards, wild dogs, wolves, hyaenas and smaller cats. The reserve is a favourite place to sloth bear and the wooded areas are dotted with sambars, chowsinghas and chitals. One can see chinkara in most open areas inside the reserve. The place is also home to over 200 species of birds including a host of migratory ones. One can see white-necked storks, Bar-headed geese, honey buzzards, blossom-headed parakeets, paradise flycatchers, saty-headed scimitar babblers including five species of vultures.
