Flint: Former US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he will meet with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week during Modi’s visit to the US. Trump, speaking at a campaign event in Flint, Michigan, also criticised India’s trade practices with the US, calling the country a “very big abuser.” He did not reveal where the meeting with Modi would take place. These remarks are part of Trump’s campaign for the upcoming November presidential election.
Despite his criticism of India’s trade policies, Trump praised Modi, calling him “fantastic.” The two leaders shared a strong relationship during Trump’s presidency. In 2020, Modi hosted a massive rally for Trump in India, which coincided with the opening of the world’s largest cricket stadium. Attendees at the event wore “Namaste Trump” hats to celebrate the visit.
Modi has maintained positive relations with both Republican and Democratic U.S. leaders, including former President Barack Obama and current President Joe Biden . During Modi’s US visit last year, the White House welcomed him with high-level defense and commerce agreements.
Modi to Attend Quad Summit and UN Event
Prime Minister Modi will be in the US from September 21-23 to participate in the upcoming Quad summit, where global leaders, including Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, are expected to discuss pressing global issues such as the conflict in Ukraine. The summit will be hosted by US President Joe Biden in Wilmington, Delaware.
Along with the Quad Summit, Modi will attend the UN’s Summit of the Future in New York on September 22-23. During his visit, he is scheduled to address an Indian community event and engage with various world leaders.
The Quad summit was initially planned to be held in India but was relocated to accommodate the leaders’ tight schedules. India is now set to host the summit next year. “Following the U.S. request to host this year’s Quad Summit, India has agreed to host the next summit in 2025,” the external affairs ministry stated.
Biden, Harris, and the Race for November
Meanwhile, U.S. President Joe Biden is preparing to host the Quad summit on September 21, reinforcing the importance of New Delhi as a counterbalance to China’s growing influence in Asia. Analysts suggest that this strategic partnership with India is a key element in the region’s geopolitical landscape.
Some world leaders who have recently attended summits with Biden have also met with Trump. As the November 5 election approaches, Trump faces Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, whose Indian heritage has been highlighted during the campaign. Polls indicate a close race between Trump and Harris.
Modi’s US Visits and Strong Ties
Modi’s relationship with US leaders has spanned across party lines. In 2019, he and Trump shared the stage at the “Howdy, Modi!” rally in Texas, where more than 50,000 people gathered to witness the event. Both leaders exchanged praise, further cementing their personal rapport.
With Modi set to return to the US for the Quad summit and the UN event, his engagement with American leadership continues to play a significant role in shaping India’s international partnerships.
