New Delhi: Ace sprinter Dutee Chand survived a horrific road accident in Cuttack district on Thursday night. The accident happened near OMP square under Madhupatna police station limits in Cuttack district as Chand had a close shave from the mishap.
Chand was en route from Jajpur to Bhubaneswar when she met with the accident. She was accompanied by her friend when a truck coming from the other side hit their car.
After the accident, Dutee told her driver to follow the truck and the car eventually overtook it near Kathajodi bridge. In the meantime, Chand informed the Police about her ordeal. Krishna Baitha, driver of the truck tried to flee the scene but was apprehended by police.
According to a report in Kalinga tv.com, the driver, after hitting Dutee Chand’s car got down from the truck and verbally abused the Indian sprinter. Other truck drivers who were passing by the road also got down from their vehicles and supported Baitha. According to sources, they also verbally abused Dutee Chand.
Dutee and her friend were eventually rescued to safety.
Who is Dutee Chand?
Dutee is one of the most decorated Indian sprinters of all time. Dutee, the current national champion in the women’s 100 metres event, is the first Indian sprinter to reach the final of the 100m event at a global youth athletics competition in 2013.
In the 2016 Rio Games, Dutee became only the third Indian woman to qualify for the women’s 100-metre event at the Summer Olympics. Chand ended India’s two-decade-long medal drought at the Asian Games by winning silver in women’s 100m at the Jakarta Asian Games. In 2019, she became the first Indian sprinter to win gold at the Universiade.
Chand’s career has been embroiled in hyperandrogenism controversy. In 2014, she was banned from international competition due to the IAAF’s Hyperandrogenism Regulations.
