New Delhi: East Bengal announced a one-year contract extension with Oscar Bruzon on the 48th birthday of their Spanish head coach on Thursday.

He had taken charge of the Kolkata giants midway last season after the departure of compatriot Carlos Cuadrat when the team has lost all their opening six matches.

From there they reached 28 points in 24 matches, the highest points tally in their five-year history but it wasn’t enough to lift them to the top six and fight for the semi-final slots as they finished ninth in the standings.

They had raised hopes of excelling in the AFC Champions League after topping their group but then lost in the semi-finals and ended their season on a dismal note with a quarter-final exit while defending the Super Cup.

But despite the trophyless campaign, EB were widely expected to retain faith in Oscar for at east another season and assemble a team and train them from the beginning of the season.

“I am thrilled to extend my journey with Emami East Bengal FC for the upcoming season. While the previous season presented challenges, particularly after a slow start, we have collectively learned from those experiences and are now fully focused on reigniting the winning mentality that defines this great club,” he said in a club statement.

“Our loyal supporters deserve nothing less than a team that reflects their passion, resilience and unwavering belief in East Bengal’s legacy”

The red and gold outfits are keen to overturn their recent poor form and are reportedly willing to spend big bucks in the transfer market to buy quality foreigners and known domestic faces.

And the club management believes Oscar is the man to take them to the familiar territory of title contention.

“Coach Oscar has brought a renewed sense of purpose to the team. His dedication to our vision of challenging for titles and ability to inspire both players and fans make him the ideal leader for our club’s future,” club director Vibhash Vardhan Agarwal said.
